The lever doesn't do anything. Wipers just sit there, against the windshield. Maybe a fuse. Where's the fuse box in E39?

The same thing happened to my '97 540iA last year and after checking the fuses (in glovebox AND trunk), it turned out to be a relay.

It was replaced by my dealer (Part # 12-63-1-742-690) under warranty and I was told that this was a common problem with the old relays. Good Luck.
