weird engine sound (archive)

'99 540/6
when i start off, in 1st or 2nd gear sometimes i hear a strange kind of squeal from the engine. it sounds kind of cool, like a high-pitched star wars laser gun going off for half a second. it doesn't sound like anything bad. anybody know what this is?
