1. Make sure you're installing it correctly. You need to put all your weight on the seat while you tighten the belt (I assume you have locking belt retractors). You may need to use some padding under the seat to get a good fit. Pool noodles are the best material.

2. Rubber mesh shelf liner under the seat helps reduce slippage over the leather.

3. Try a different seat. You didn't say what seat or what type of seat (infant, convertible, toddler, booster) you have. Our Century NextStep DX toddler seat fits tightly without using the tether. So does our Britax Roundabout (a convertible).

If you want the added security of a tether (which is a good idea, if practical), you really can't get around having it installed correctly, IMO, since only the manufacturer really knows where and how to place the anchor so that it performs correctly in a collision.

I was flogged by the CHP at a car seat check last summer for tethering to a cargo anchor in the back of our 4Runner because those aren't engineered for crash forces.
