Since the two of you have probably disassembled and reassembled your cars more times than most I've got a easy question for you....

I am in the process of buying a newer 540i and I want to scavenge the Universal Garage Door Opener out of my older 5'er and install in the new car. How do I get the panel open so I can unplug the old unit?

Before I start prying with a screw driver I'd like to get an idea if there is any special trick to avoid breaking anything.

Jeff

First - must remove the lamp module as that is what hold the front of the panel in place.

Us a flat blade screwdriver (or similar) to pry downwards on the edge of the lamp module closed to the panel.

When the lamp is out now push the panel toward the front (real;easing the rear sliding tabs) and pull down gently.

The plastic clips on the sides can easily crack and will then not hold very well.

If one cracks you can re-stiffen it by placing a gob of hot glue behind it to prevent it from bending backward.

Cheers

Jim Cash
