Brilliant Einsteins, in many folks' minds so are nose bras, car covers, winter tires, valve stems, seat covers, bumpers, seat belts, air-bag steering wheels, head rests, rear-window defrosters, antennae, windshield wipers, and lots of other things either standard on our cars or options purchased for one reason or another.
A car has to be a combination of functional and aesthetically pleasing. Like virtually everything in life, we make intelligent tradeoffs to achieve a balance.
Winter tires look ugly to some, but we can DRIVE IN THE SNOW.
Car covers may look ugly to some, but it keeps BIRD SH*T off of our cars.
Nose bras and mud flaps may look ugly to some, but they keep the PAINT FROM GETTING CHIPPED.
Sheesh. The guy does a fantastic job of winterizing his car for a part of the country where it is absolutely required, and folks say his acts of prevention are ugly. I'm in (usually) sunny Northern California, so nose bras, winter tires, and mudflaps are not nearly as useful, but I'm open-minded and geographically-flexible enough to realize that not everyone lives around me nor has the same priorities.
All that said, I think the "paint them silver" is a wonderful idea. Too bad the recommendation was preceded with, "they're ugly".
