My recommendation, try to go to your dealer, and see the regular climate control for yourself. I think you will not miss that much from the auto climate control. Because it is not fully automatic at all. You must still turn the AC on/off independently, not automatic at all. You also still need to adjust the middle temp vent manually. The dual zone is rarely used too. I think the BMW Auto Climate Control should be called Semi Auto Climate Control, because I had an Acura Legend too with FULL auto climate control. You just set the temperature that you like, it will automatically adjust the speed, ac on/off, ventilation control ETC without any further input from you, very nice.

See for yourself, but I think the auto climate control on the E39 is not that usefull. And you will not miss much at all.
