I am in the market for a relatively cheap 525i sedan. My problem is, I want the auto climate control for the car, but it is only offered through the expensive convenience package. My question is, is there any way to change the manual unit with the automatic a/c through the parts department or through the factory? Are there any mid year changes for the 5-series? Thanks in advance.

I doubt that it would be a practical upgrade to convert to the auto system.
You would have to add all the vent control motors (assuming this is possible - some are inside the main unit - the top of the dash would have to be removed), and make a lot of wiring changes - have to connect it to the instrument cluster to pick up the outdoor temp signal.

THere may be even more items that I am not aware of.

Cheers
