I've seen the messages in archives about the fact that a dealer installation of the navigation system results in a different set-up than a factory installation - namely, it's not incorporated into the dash.

My question - why? Isn't it possible to order the in-dash navigation system (e.g. what if someone has it and it "breaks" or malfunctions? the dealer must be able to replace it, right?)... Has anyone successfully installed the in-dash "factory-look" navigation system after the fact?

Thanks!

yes the dealer can order parts for repairs...

No, the dealer will not order ALL the wires, parts needed to install it from fresh.
Some of the wires runs through the ceiling so the cost of a custom install comes in for this... or the dealer will end up ordering much more than just the Nav parts.

I guess if someone insist on the in-dash look with all money aside, it could be done but it sure would run much more than the $2,000 as an option since some things like the GPS receiver wont fit since the car was built without provisions...
