Although I generally agree with your comments, I think the key year is 98. The double vanos is good but not necessary, and some think that the non-vanos engine is in fact a bit more responsive. Either year, both engines are marvelous and under-rated.

98 was the year the sport package was introduced, which is perhaps the most important option for the 528-30 series, for any year.

Overall, I find the 528 sport stick an amazing compromise for all-around driving. Even though a bit more power might be fun, it's still too easy to drive past the endurance of most passengers, in braking, side G-forces, acceleration, and more. Nonetheless, you can drive quite sedately and comfortably if you really rein it in.
