So a few questions:
* Is it worth buying a helmet for events like these, especially if it's your first time? I don't want to be left out of the fun because I'm waiting to borrow a helmet.
CCA usually have a helmets to rent for the weekend. It's up to you if you want to use a used helmet that other people have used.
* Are the motorcycle helmets and automotive racing helmets basically the same? The automotive helmets run from $300, while motorcycle helmets start at about $100.
Although most CCA will accept motorcycle helmet, it is best you get automotive helmets. The crash protection between the two types are different. You'll have to check the Snell site to see what the difference is. The lately 2001 standard will soon make the Snell 90 obsolete. You don't want to get any used helmet with Snell 90 rating.
* Any downside to used helmets? The Ebay helmets for sale are usually slightly used motorcycle helmets ($50-100) or collectors edition F1 helmets ($400-$1000).
Yes. (1) You don't know the condition of the helmet even if you look at them. (2) A proper fitting helmet is one of the most important part of getting a helmet. Unless you have been properly fitted by a knowledgeable sales person, you can't tell how good a helmet will fit you. Don't mess with your life. Guess who just die today from NASCAR with some of the best safety equipment money can buy?
* What are you all using?
It is best to go to a good helmet store to determine that. There are many GGC CCA members that can probably recommend a good store to go to. No mail order or Ebay, definitely.
