I live in Canada so th those who think that NYC is cold - I have news for you - try 35 below! The answer is to wait for a milder day bring a hose connected to an inside source such as the laundry room sink and wash it. Then drive to a nearby place that has an underground heated parking garage and let the car fully dry there. Some underground garages here offer a car wash with a pressure spray.
I have tried touchless car washes with dryers but there is enough moisture that the locks can freeze. Last winter I had to call BMW assistance because my locks froze while I was in the car. In the end I had to drive to an indoor garage and wait for them to thaw!
While I beleive in a good wax as fall protection, leaving salt on the car is a great way to scratch the paint surface. Those salt crytals are fine but they are a lot harder than car wax and paint.
