Gary,

I agree with the previous replies, but here is my input since I have been racing with the SCCA Solo2 for several years now. I think the first question you need to ask is if this is going to be a one time event, or a long time hobby. If you are only going to do this a couple of times then it may not be worth spending several hundred dollars on your own helmet. If you have no experience with racing, then you may want to check out some other BMWCCA or SCCA races to help you get a feel of what to expect. My bet is that you will get hooked, and will make this more than a one time occurence. If so, do not go cheap on a helmet. This is the most important investment you will make. I would stongly advise against buying one from someone 2nd hand.

Don't worry about getting left out at the race because from my experience there should be plenty of loaner helmets and everyone will get the same track time regardless of how long it takes to put one on. Also, there is a difference between motorcycle and auto helmets. So, they are not supposed to allow any to wear these at racing events.

Another place to try is racerwholesale.com. This is where many people in my region have gotten their equipment.

I hope this helps, and if you have any other question, let me know.

Sam

I'm considering driving school through the Golden Gate Chapter of the BMWCCA, probably in October. One of the requirements is a SNELL 1990 or 95 helmet, which I've gathered at this point is actually a DOT safety standard rather than a brand or type of helmet.

So a few questions:

* Is it worth buying a helmet for events like these, especially if it's your first time? I don't want to be left out of the fun because I'm waiting to borrow a helmet.

* Are the motorcycle helmets and automotive racing helmets basically the same? The automotive helmets run from $300, while motorcycle helmets start at about $100.

* Any downside to used helmets? The Ebay helmets for sale are usually slightly used motorcycle helmets ($50-100) or collectors edition F1 helmets ($400-$1000).

* What are you all using?

Thanks!
