important nav question (archive)

hello, this topic has been on my mind for a while, and i been trying to figure it out, but with no luck. so i wanting to ask the help of my fellow e39'ers to help me. from my understanding of the navagation systems, their are 2 models.

1st one with no woodgrain on it, has buttons on both sides of it and it takes up the whole area below the air vents, and is hiding the tape

2nd one is a split with the nav on the right and the tape deck and buttons to your left.

my question is which years had which model(97-02) in them. and is one better than the other, or has more functions, this has been eating away at my brain for several months now, any replies and info would be greatly appreciated
