I was told that the Split Screen you describe is not yet available in the North American market. Only in Europe. The '01 5 series brochure must have been prepared in a hurry, as there are lots of Euro-only pictures in it.

I have the older one (smaller screen with buttons on the left), and you can select to see either the map, or a screen that gives you directions with an icon and road names.

I've seen pictures of the newer one (with 16x9 screen) on the BMW website displaying BOTH the map and the icon screen side-by-side at the same time. IMHO, this is by far the best way to "navigate", and it makes me jealous of the newer nav system...
