OK, I resolved the issue and the shop is going to replace the "new" windshield with the correct OEM part with the IR sensor, and insurance approved this. Someone on a bike smacked the windshield with a baseball bat. I am glad the person spared any major body panel, or I would be really pissed. Thanks for the info.

mirror if the windshield needs to be replaced on 2001 5-series? Is the rain-sensor held in place by so kind of glue? I can see dealerships charge a fortune to do this, so how can I do this myself? The insurance company paid for replacing the windshield already, but now my rain-sensor/mirror is dangling from the roof. Please advise!
