The MY2001 nav system is nicknamed "wide-screen" and is formally mk III (mk I was the initial release in 1995, mk II was the one from 1997 until 2000, mk III came with MY2001 in September 2000).

There is just one visible difference: The wider screen (which can also be used in TV mode). I know there is a split screen capability in the system (which is an OEMed version of VDO 5000), but current BMW software does not use it (perhaps becaue of backward compatibility?). The official BMW specs before release said split screen should be part of mk III. I have not seen it. I have a European MY2001 with nav and cannot see any real difference (except for a faster map scroll). The VDO 5000 system has split screen in its VDO version.

The voice is part of the system software and is not read from the map CDs.
