IMHO....I think that the BMW quality is excellent. Every manufacturer will have its issues....

In my own mind, with the point that you make, I think that the number of people that you take your "sample" from might make the difference. For example, if you have talked to say 10 people, maybe 1 might have had an issue or complaint (~10%), but if you talk to 1000 people, that same 10% is now 100 people. It's easy to forget about 1 person pointing out issues, but when you have 100 people writing, it seems overwhelming.... or like the car has problems.

On top of this, I think that people willing to read and post to a forum like this are more "in tune" with their cars, so they will detect and want to discuss things that other people may not even notice....

jmo....

Question for the board: I have a '97 528i, 5spd, plus (delivered 6/96). This has been the best car I have ever owned. Quiet, fast, reliable, etc, etc. I have spoken with numerous other '97 E39 owners (528s and 540s) and all speak very highly of their cars. Yet, when I read this board, I hear of many problems (wind noise, poor shifting, etc, etc) that do not apply to my car. Therefore, I ask, has the quality of the E39s dropped over the years? I have no idea if this is true or not, but reading this board, after driving my car for nearly five years, would make me wary of buying another. Comments??
