We get far fewer options here than anywhere else, and not just in phones. There's been much speculation on this recently. It may have to do with US laws regarding deposits being fully refundable. Maybe it's just cheaper to sell smaller numbers of variations, fewer spare parts, etc. We get fewer engine options, fewer colors, no individual program, and inferior electronics.

Anyway, phones are the easiest retrofit I know of. It takes little effort and expense to install a hard car kit into a E39 and get 90% of the BMW car phones functions at 1/4th the price.

BMW electronics just plain suck and are vastly overpriced and never upgradable when the technology changes. I've got a worthless BMW phone in my 97 540i -- it's just too old. Yet, people still clamor for the latest model, which will again be obsolete in a few years but will cost $2000 so you can use a cheazy Motorola phone. And then there's my absurd DSP premium sound. NAV is another one of those systems where BMW is far behind the competition.....
