I was also surprised at how "unsmooth" the auto transmission seemed to be but now I am not so sure it really unsmooth or the very perceptible exhaust note seems to emphasis the shift. If you are sitting in the passenger seat and plug up your ears, you don't notice it. Also, it is my impression that you can't have it both ways: If you want crisp, lag free shifts under hard acceleration, you won't have the "single gear/did it shift?" feeling you get with most automatics. Surprise of the day - doing over 90 and having the auto downshift.
