Yes, but it included GSM roaming areas from other providers (alternate color), which shows more accurately what "real" coverage would be. Compare to the Cellular News map and it matches pretty well.
The lack of analog coverage is a real problem. Analog almost completely fills in the gaps in the US. If you're in the US and you can't even get analog service, you're likely WAY out in the sticks. Digital coverage on my TDMA phone is somewhat limited, but it's only important to me for the digital features I use, like paging (server A is down, for example).
Yes, you can get GSM coverage in major cities, but you can't get coverage BETWEEN major cities. So if you travel a lot on business via plane, you're probably ok.
I personally need to be in touch 24/7, and that includes when I'm goofing off in the desert by the Mexican border or driving with my wife up or down the California coast.
