The map at the top of this thread (a couple of messages up) is a composite of all the US GSM carriers. It looks spotty to me. What I meant when I set GSM roaming, was the handoff to other GSM carriers, rather than changing band. Now a GSM/Analog phone would really be something!

Thanks for info on the AMPS dual-band. I didn't know that was done, and it would definitely make the phone more useful.

Don't get me wrong, GSM is a technology that I would love to see take off in the US. It's far superior to other standards. Unfortunately, I've come to appreciate the wider range of coverage of a digital/analog combo.

I have a hard time recommending GSM to my company because of the GSM coverage. I care about GSM features but my CEO could care less. He wants to talk and he wants one phone, as small as possible, to go with his tiny laptop. My interest in GSM was in the digital services provided, such as the cellular modems.
