I have seen other 540i owners replace theirs as early as 18-20k miles. Yours equipped w/ the heavier high output V8 and automatic would likely require brake service more frequently than, say, a 525i w/ manual. And @ 35k miles, I wouldn't place your brake pads as prematurely worn...although going past 40k miles would be more in line w/ the norm for the E39.

But the driver's driving style has alot to do with the wear rate more so than the design and materials of the braking system. For example, a driver who's anticipating a stopping condition two traffic lights ahead and releases the gas pedal at that time to wait out the red for the green is going to see longer brake (and tire) life than one who's not anticipating and drives right up to the red.
