That's cause you should be looking at 16" wheels not 17.

Takes but one nice winter pothole to ruin a 17" rim.

I've had alloy wheels on all my cars for almost 20 years - summer & winter. The only wheel that I've ever bent was a 15" Any alloy wheel can be bent. The larger ones with low profile tires are marginally more vulnerable. Keep you tires properly inflated and do your best to avoid curbs and potholes. The difference in vulnerability seems pretty trivial. The difference in driving performance between performance tires (even winter tires) and 16" w/all season radials is vast.
