Just ordered a 540ia sport. Problem is that I drive to work every day in NYC. Did I make a mistake with those performance tires and the infamous potholes in NYC. I am rethinking this whole thing. Maybe a 740i with 17" run flat tires would be more practical(but less fun)

Any ideas?

You'll love the car and bless the moment that you chose the Sports package. The suspension package is still solidly in the luxury ride category, but it performs infinitely better than the non-sports package. The 17" wheels are marginally more vulnerable to pothole and curb damage than the 16" wheels. The difference is, however, pretty minor. The handling difference is not minor.

To minimize the potential harm to the wheels/tires, make certain that you keep them properly inflated. I find 40 psi front & back works best for me. Its better to err on the side of higher pressure (within the placarded range) rather than towards the low end.

Along with the much better wheels & tires and suspension, the sports package gives you a 3.15:1 differential, which is a very positive upgrade in performance.
