hope. I have a '97 540iA and the door seals had rattled since the third month I owned the car. BMW NA replaced the seals three times, and the dealer took it on themselves to do it for the fourth time, with the "felt seals." The last ones stayed quiet for a month. After that, it was a year of rattle noise. Drove me insane. About two months ago, my BMW service dept. advised me of a product they have been trying, called "Kent" dry lubricant. They gave me a can, since it is supposedly only available from auto dealers. I cleaned the seals with "Goof Off 2" (less destructive to rubber) and then applied the Kent. It is three months an no noises! Even if I had to use it one a month I would have been happy, but so far I am delighted. Ask you dealer to check into "Kent" products.
At the risk of awaking the dead I have to bring up this dreaded subject 'cause I'm going in for warrenty work w/45k miles and may be my last chance to address this one. After reading archives etc it seems new seals (felt or otherwise)seem to fix for a while but don't always correct the problem permanently. So here's the question - IS IT WORTH THE FIGHT?
Do the felt ones (I think these are the "updated type") really work? Will I have to fight the dealer (in MD) for this, or is it pretty much a given. Will removing and replacing with the Felt ones cause other problems like wind noise or other things related to disassembly/reassembly problems.
All feedback greatly appreciated!
