...I've been reading through the archives RE: the Xenon retrofit kits and I have a few more questions.

I see a lot of "scuttle" about how one should not install HID (Xenon) headlamps without the auto leveling system because BMW would not have made it that way if it weren't "required". I have even seen reference to the headlamp washer system required to prevent the potential build up of light scattering particles on the outer lenses.

My comments (please correct as req'd): As I understand it, German law required the self leveling (aiming) and autolamp wash system on cars with HID systems (I think I saw this on Hella Int'l site but not sure off hand).

BMW is selling HID systems without headlamp washers in the US (I have seen E46s set up this way), so that must not be "critical". I make it a point to stop and clean my head lamps anyway as build up of salt, bugs, etc. significantly reduces my halogen light output.

As far as the auto aiming system - I understand Mercedes Benz does not use an auto aiming system because they use an auto leveling suspension and dynamic aiming is not required since the lights are aimed correctly initially and the suspension adjusts to keep the entire vehicle level thereafter.

Question: How are the other companies that are now installing Xenon (Acura, Audi, Ford, etc.) handling this? Do they have auto leveling systems installed? If not, then I don't see the auto leveling issue as "critical" either but rather like automatic temperature control on the A/C - it's great to have but not required for Air Conditioned air!

I am planning on upgrading to the HIDs. I would love to have the auto-self leveling system (even if it meant a lot of work on my part) but I don't think I'll give up the benefit of Xenons because auto leveling isn't availble "after the fact".

Mike
