IMO and my experience the scratches (and yes I have a Jet Black car so there are many and very visible) are the result of not the wash, but the drying. Problem is that most use synthetic or poly towels which have fibers that scratch soft BMW paint. Ever notice how soft the German/BMW paint surface is vs. say Ford or GM types (it is very hard). So any poor quality towel will cause scratching after a clean wash. The other problem is that they don't wash the towels very well so any residual dirt in the towels just gets wiped all over your clean car causing scratches.

I haven't tried it myself but have considered trying an auto wash and bringing my own 100% cotton dry towels for them to use.

Till then, I keep washing myself.

I have taken my car through the car wash and have started to notice scratches, does anyone use the car wash, BMW says it's OK.
