I just spent hundreds of dollars getting my 97 540i's seals replaced and upgraded to new seals. They still squeak. Gummi Pheldge or, my favorite, Zymol Seal, do a great job in temporarily quieting the seals. However, you will need to apply the stuff often, probably a couple times a month.

When I was at the dealer yesterday, one of the older (wiser?) mechanics went on a drive with me to help find another rattle. I asked him about the door seals (and crappy radiators) and his answer was that it's because manufacturers are being pressured to build easily recyclable cars, both in that they must have parts that are easy to recycle and the cars must be easily stripped down when they're lives are finished.
