Sadly, BMW service is not as well regarded as Audis, including such corporate approaches like nationwide databases of their cars. Sometime you can luck into getting info from a service shop, but in general they seem to not like giving info out.
(2) Are there any preferred extended warranty companies that actually pay for repairs anyone here has used (this dealer uses a company called Great Lakes Warranty)?
I used to see warrantygold recommended but recent posts question them. Just saw warrantybynet posted here but haven't researched them yet. Anyone care to add more info here?
(3) How long is the BMW powertrain warranty (50k like Audi?)?
The standard BMW warranty runs out after 3 years or 70k mi (I believe that's the #mi). You won't be in warranty by either number, sorry. I wasn't either with my 97 540iA.
(4) What is required for the 90k service? Anything $$$ like a timing belt, etc?
Service II is probably what the car will need, and this is $600 nearly everywhere according to past surveys on this board. Wish I could find it for $400! Mostly the shop follows a lengthy inspection list, while some parts are replaced too. There is no fixed mileage for this service, but the yellow (and red) lights on the instrument cluster, lower left side, indicate the need on startup. You get 5 yellows counting down to a service visit, then a red one if you're late, then another red one (I think) if you're really late. There is generally a message below the LEDs about which service you need.
I hope the car turns out to be as awesome as you hope after inspection. You could afford to spend a few thousand on repairs at the price you are getting with this car! Its awesome. I still have a big smile on my face after 3 months!!!
Good luck, and let us know how things shake out!
