I am having the front tires on my 2000 540iA Sport replaced at 16,700 miles. The shoulder tread on the left front is gonners and almost gone on the right front. Rears are still fine. My question: Is this normal?

Yes, if you don't rotate. Typical Macpherson strut suspension wear.

As I've said before, you can rotate tires on a staggered tire car, but they have to be removed from the wheel and moved to the opposite side of the car, it's up to you whether the improved tire life is worth the expense.

BMW's recommendation not to rotate is utter bullshit, they don't want to be on the hook to do it under the service program.

Our SP2000Es went 33K. Now wearing S-02s.
