My main gripe with my ’97 540 iA which I bought new 4 years ago, is bubbling engine paint (see below) after about 20,000 miles. If that’s all I can crab about, it’s been the best car I’ve ever owned. Others with ‘97’s have had many more grief’s (Gary Ray comes to mind), but all in all, my early E39 540 is trouble free. A 2000 model should be even better, so I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another.
