Hey the wife's getting ready to retire and we are thinking about a 2000 540ia . We have a 97 528ia now with 60k and we want something with warranty left as we will have to keep it awhile. I know the early v-8s had block problems that were solved but I would like some input from anyone with high mileage 540s
BGMy main gripe with my ’97 540 iA which I bought new 4 years ago, is bubbling engine paint (see below) after about 20,000 miles. If that’s all I can crab about, it’s been the best car I’ve ever owned. Others with ‘97’s have had many more grief’s (Gary Ray comes to mind), but all in all, my early E39 540 is trouble free. A 2000 model should be even better, so I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another.
