Check out my web site for the Consumer Reports chart on the 5-series. The newer the 5-series, the fewer problems reported. The 97's are the lowest in reliability. I pity the Europeans who owned 96 models!

That said, the 97 is, on average, reliable. That said, I would go for at least a 98.
