Yes - I just had this problem on my MY99 540. The only fix is to have the instrument cluster replaced. Of course, this will be done under warranty.

My problem was, the issue was intermittent. I know better than to drop the car off at the dealer with an intermittent problem - becaues 90% of the time the problem will not occur when they test it, and then they do nothing. My strategy was, as soon as I saw the lettering breaking up, I would start driving towards the dealer. As long as I could get a service rep to see it in action, I knew they'd replace it. Problem was, sometimes the problem would clear up as I was on my way to the dealer. On the third try, the problem stayed, the dealer saw it, order the part, etc, etc.

One thing I noticed after they replaced the cluster is that the yellow enginer indicator light (which was an icon shaped like an engine) became a yellow indicator that says in plain text "CHECK ENGINE SOON". I liked the old icon better...

Has anyone had parts of their dash's alphanumeric display letters/digits missing? Why is this??
