After reading a post by Mike98 540 and Jim Cash on this topic, I picked up a sunroof seal (latest generation) at Crevier BMW for $46. This seal is smooth rubber with some very small grooves, not the fuzzy type of seal that came on my 97 540. It was a simple job, although removing all the old adhesive took about 40 minutes with some Goo Gone and my fingernail. The test drive proved a success. At 85 mph on the freeway, the difference in windnoise between having the sunshade closed and open is almost inaudible. Previously, I had a substantial amount of windnoise with the sunshade open.
Thanks to Jim Cash and Mike for letting me realize that this is a simple and inexpensive task.
