After reading a post by Mike98 540 and Jim Cash on this topic, I picked up a sunroof seal (latest generation) at Crevier BMW for $46. This seal is smooth rubber with some very small grooves, not the fuzzy type of seal that came on my 97 540. It was a simple job, although removing all the old adhesive took about 40 minutes with some Goo Gone and my fingernail.

The test drive proved a success. At 85 mph on the freeway, the difference in windnoise between having the sunshade closed and open is almost inaudible. Previously, I had a substantial amount of windnoise with the sunshade open.

Thanks to Jim Cash and Mike for letting me realize that this is a simple and inexpensive task.


Hmmm - Glad you solved the noise problem but seems like you paid a bit.

When I priced for mine the quotes were:
- flocked one #54 12 8 209 723 = $58 Can
- non flocked #54 12 8 209 723 = $37 Can

Converting to $us at about .65 $46 looks high.

But then the Can price does not include the 15% additional taxes.


I went with the flocked unit - because the dealer tech said their experience was that it was the better one for noise. Remains to be seen.
