The 540i may very suit your needs as a family. You should keep it for the first 6 months after your baby is born, and then decide what would best fit your needs.

Whenever my family goes on long trips, I always prefer to take the 540i over my wife's X5. My son's stroller actually fits better in the 540i than the X5 because the cargo area is deeper. Nothing like having an SUV for big boxes, though. That could be solved by replacing the 'Stang with a Taurus Wagon if you want to be economical.
