I installed the UGDO and I figured that I may as well install a radar detector and Chips detector while I was at it.
The radar detector is the Passport 8500 (I was going to go for the Valentine, but come on, that thing needs some upgrading... plus I like the voltage readout on the passport, and rear radar is significantly blocked by my dark tint and electric sunshade). I dis-assembled the cig. lighter cord and I installed the mute button and the LEDs into the microphone panel near the UGDO. I don't use the BMW phone system (in fact, probably 90% of you don't either).
The Chips detector is the Uniden BCT-12, which is basically a police scanner. It scans the local police frequencies continuously (I usually leave the volume all the way down to avoid having to listen to 1-Adam-12 all day). But more importantly, it gives loud warnings whenever it detects any transmission over the Calif. Highway Patrol channels. It's already saved me once.
Since you've read this far, I'd appreciate any words of wisdom with the UGDO. I can get it to work fine with my garage opener, but it won't learn the code to my gate opener (and it's not a scanning, code alternating type -- it's just the same frequency transmitted every time). I hold the buttons down and after 1 minute the green light goes out (it never gets to the fast flashing to indicate that the code was learned).
Thanks
