Sorry to ask questions that must have been answered 100's of times, but I can't find relevant, current answers to two basic questions:

What's the best method for purchasing a new 530/540, weighting a good deal slightly more than superb service? After I got my '99 e46, I discovered that dealers in SoCal were selling them for invoice +$500, and I struggled locally (BayArea) to find one below retail.

And related: roughly how is the pricing on new E39s determined? E.g invoice plus $x or MSRP minus $x.

I just want to get a clue before talking to a dealer about pricing. I've driven a couple, but the salesperson was so blatantly ignorant and the inventory so low I didn't want to waste his or my time. Any help/sympathy someone could throw my way would be appreciated...
