Certain (but not all) 1999 and 2000 BMW models with the M52TU engine may have a thermostat that could fail prematurely. This voluntary Recall Campaign is for the purpose of checking the thermostat in the affected cars and replacing them if necessary. The models involved in this recall were built between June 1, 1998 and March 31, 2000.

Here is the VIN number range for the models that are involved:

MODEL VIN

528i BY15004 – BY19809

528iA BY20007 – BY35019
GU00000 – GU26677

528iT BR95003 – BR95661

528iTA BV60004 – BV65451

If the thermostat in your model is manufactured by Behr it must be replaced. If your thermostat is manufactured by Wahler it should not be replaced.

The part number for the new thermostat is 11 53 0 139 877.

If your model is involved in this recall you should get a letter from BMW in the near future.
