Planning to get the E39 1997..any suggestions? (archive)

I am planning to get the 1997 E39 ...the price is pretty similar on the 540i and the 528i. Does these cars have many problems since the V8 was bad on the 94s. Also, is the tranny reliable? SHould I get it or should I buy other years ones. THanks
