koneng-

Just got back from a quick road trip to SF too.

I didn't take my Boxster, and I really missed my 528i.

You won't find anything that is more stable, solid, unflinching, buttoned-down etc etc on the freeway at high speeds than the E39. After being spoiled by one, anything else will seem inferior. It is just so far above the bar.

You've got two cars now, right? CLK and 530? I'd get rid of the CLK and keep the 530 and the M3, unless you want the M5 (that would cover everything.) As for the M3 handling, the steering in the 2001 model is overboosted. Requires lots of attention at higher speeds. I am ASSUMING that it will be fixed along with the rest of the 3 series line, since information on the 3 series board is that BMW is un-boosting the steering from something like May 2001 production on. The handling specifically on the M3, I felt was great... minimal body roll. But a 3 series will never feel as good as a 5 series on a long trip to Vegas or LA to SF. Not possible. 5 series just has extra "quality" and solidity where the 3 doesn't. In the M3, you're going to hear more road noise, more wind noise... and it's a little lighter... so you'll feel the crosswinds and perhaps be a little less settled.

Just my opinion.
If you can have 2 cars get one for fun and one for trips/commuting.
:)
