I'm curious, have you ever changed the ATF on your 540ia? My car has 50K mi. on it and I've been debating wheather or not to change the fluid and filter. If your car has gone 120K mi. without touching the transmission, then I will probably leave mine alone with the lifetime fluid.

The engine in the E39 540's is different than the one that was in the '94's (greatly improved). Like any other car, they have their "bugs" and some years may have different bugs that others. For the most part, problems with E39's have been pretty common from year to year.

My '97 540iA has close to 120k on it and it still runs like a new one (well, pretty close at least!). I guess that says something about the reliablity of the engine/trans.

Just try to get as much info on the car's history before you buy it. That can give you a good idea of what you're about to get yourself into.
