I've never touched the trans on my car so I'd say that you're more than safe for a while. However, most of those miles have been business traveling. So, although high, the mileage probably hasn't subjected the drivetrain to the abuse that harder/"sportier" driving might. I've always just gone along with the owner's manual that says something along the lines of "the ATF fluid will last the life of the car". I guess the big question is what BMW considers to be a normal "life".

Since the warranty ran out, I've been going to an excellent independent BMW mechanic. Now that you've raised the question, I'll probably run it by him next time I'm in for a tune up.

One thing that I can tell you with certainty is that the 540 is one resilient car. If you keep up with your genral maintenance, you'll easily double the mileage you've already got.
