I live in New Jersey and during last weeks heat wave in which temps. topped 100 degrees, the climate control fan took on a "mind of it's own" and has malfunctioned since. About 2 minutes after starting the car, the fan jumps up to full speed and then varies between low and high for no apparent reason. Manual override has no affect. In fact, the automatic setting is adjusting to the proper temperature speed setting but the fan is not responding.

I was hoping someone on this board may have some insight as the thought of having to call the dealer for service when it takes a month just to schedule an appointment is nauseating. I would love to be able to repair myself or take it to a shop that knows what they're doing. The dealer I purchased the car from can't even balance the wheels properly, and they're obnoxious to boot.

My 2000 528ia recently started doing the exact same thing you described. Apparently, the problem is with the fan resistor pack or control module and is a VERY common problem with E39s. I posted a similar description last week on this board and got a quick response from another member that had experienced the same thing. I called my dealer and based on the description I gave over the phone he ordered the replacement part and scheduled the service for me. BMW NA is also familiar with the problem as I got a call from them based on my post to this board.

Good luck with your dealer.
