my dad's 528i compressor was making the same noise, BMW replaced it under warranty. They said "nothing is really wrong, it just sounds bad". On the clutch, i thought when they got week they engaged at the beginning of the travel? I very well may be wrong though. I think my dad pays about 40 bucks at the dealer for an oil change, and does it when it gets down to two green bars.
