pot hole blues - HELP! front tire went into paver- (archive)

Hi bimmer experts...feel the pain with me...driving in SF went up a street with a cobblestone pathway, didnt see a paver out of place, front left wheel went in, next thing I knew, their was a grinding noise, smell coming from the front tire assembly. Immediately stopped, had AAA come out. The mechanic in the tow truck checked it out, said that the strut assembly (spring, etc?) had broken, etc. and the strut? was resting on the tire?

Had my baby towed to a local bimmer shop. will find out pain on monday. Any advice on what it could be? cost of repairs? etc? any comfort would help since its not covered by warranty (97 540iA, 68K)..thanks
