I have a Black 2001 540i.
Here's my routine.
Wash Car with Zymol or Griots Garage Car Wash using Boars Hair Brushes from Griots Garage. Use one brush for the bottom of the car and wheels and a different one for the rest of the car. The Boars Hair brushes are wonderful and will not scratch your black car. Make sure you wash it early in the morning or late in the day when there is no sun shining on the car.
Dry the car with a California Water Blade - use it very lightly. Then use a clean white Cotton Towel to finish drying the car.
In between washings, you need to use a Detailing Spray - I like the ones from 3M and OneGrand. Make sure you use two different towels/cloths to apply and one to remove. I use the cloths from Griots garage to polish - I've tried the micro-fiber cloths and I can see very fine scratches in the black finish - so I'm back to the cotton cloths.
Waxing - I'm using Blitz ever 2-3 months - Apply with a foam applicator. Apply in a back and forth motion from the front of the car to the rear - never use a circular motion. Remove with 100% cotton Canon Fieldcrest Towels (white so you can see any dirt). Refold the towel often so you always have a clean side against the car.
Claying - I clay my car before waxing (can also do it after waxing) to give it that show-car feel. Make sure the car is absolutely 100% clean and dust free before beginning - and dirt on your car will get caught in the clay and scratch your car.
Tear off a small piece of clay (Clay Magic or Griots Garage) and press it flat into a disc about 2" in diameter. Float the clay with Meguiars Final Inspection - make sure the clay never comes in contact with the paint - there should always be copious amounts of Final Inspection on under the clay. Best to hold the bottle of Final Inspection in one hand and the clay in the other. Float it in back and forth motions - never circular. Keep doing it until the clay doesn't make any noise. This stuff is remarkable when done correctly.
Anyway - that's my routine - other folks have their own techniques that may work just as well - I've been messing around with mine for a while and this one seems to work for me. Try it and see what you thing.
