I own an E34 M5 I drive every single day and have driven the E39. They are far more refined and comfortable than my car (though they get crappy mileage around town) and I would consider it quite a luxurious car compared to my E34 with full suspension and lumpy idle.

Since I have been on the BMW scene (a little over a year) I have seen several M5's traded back in to the local dealership because the owners said that they weren't good "everyday" cars. I don't know if this was crock, or if this is what the dealers were feeding me to get me to buy an M5.

I would assume that the M5 has more maintenance costs, but I have no facts to substantiate this claim. So dealers, please come forth and explain this, because eventually I would like to get an M5.

Why is the 540 supposedly a better everyday car?

I have a 540/6 and have never driven an M5. I can't even conceptualize in theory why the 540 would be better suited as an everyday car compared to the M5. Could it be the 17" wheels not as prone to bending in potholes? The spare tire? Better gas mileage? I don't see why the 540 would beat out the M5 as an everyday driver. Heck, if I could afford it, an M5 would be in my driveway right now, and I don't think I'd be giving anything up. Can anyone shed some light on this topic?
