To prevent further damage, you should religiously condition the car's leather. Takes about 10-20 minutes, and I do it at least once a month. I use Meguiar's Leather Cleaner/Conditioner if it's dirty, and then Lexol Leather Conditioner if it's not. One or two coats per time. Any reputable leather conditioner should be fine, though.
