In last month's Roundel, the editor offered an explanation for the CDV valve - due to the possibility of applying large amounts of torque to the differential - BMW is protecting the rear end (which would be covered under warranty) by placing a valve that actually puts more stress on the clutch (which would not be covered under (long term) warranty as a wear and tear item).Sounds like your typical corporate thinking. Therefore, I'm sure you or rather the Roundel is right. But, come on how wimpy can this diff be if it can't handle the torque from a stock 2.8 I6? Shame on BMW. Personally, I think they put it in to protect the drivetrain from the V-8 in the 540's. It's just easier to build them all (540's & 528's) with CDV's. In fact, Dave Z. said something about the 540 and 528 CDV's being the same part with two different part numbers. Whatever! I'm just glad the damn thing has been drilled.
